Project Description

This complex project involved construction of an 8-story addition above the existing 5-story rehabilitation hospital. The total project included over 525,000 sq.ft. of new construction and renovation. The programs housed in the facility included state-of-the-art rehabilitation and research facilities, physical therapy gym, occupational therapy medicine area, adult and pediatric patient rooms and suites, and physician offices.

Working with the structural engineer, a design was developed to completely span the existing facility. An independent safety consultant was employed to assist in pre-planning the steel erection process and to be on site during all steel construction. The limited site situation required all materials to be stored offsite and a just-on-time delivery system to be developed.

Following completion of the new construction, the hospital moved into the new tower and the entire façade on the original building was replaced to match the new tower.

Project Unique Characteristics

  • Existing hospital remained in operation throughout entire construction period
  • Constructed a floor plan on top of occupied 5 story rehabilitation facility
  • Required extensive coordination with traffic authorities due to being bounded on two sides by existing buildings and two sides by busy city streets
  • Constructed open span floor plan without interior columns. Utilized “super” column structure combining steel & reinforced concrete
